Nia Therapeutics validates its 60-channel closed-loop memory implant in sheep

In Brain Stimulation, the company reports stable decoding and stimulation over months, a step toward human trials for memory loss after brain injury.

Nia Therapeutics has published the first in-animal validation of its Smart Neurostimulation System in the journal Brain Stimulation. The wireless implant records from 60 channels across four brain regions, compared with up to six on NeuroPace’s RNS and four on Medtronic’s Percept, and uses machine learning to stimulate when memory encoding is likely to fail. In three sheep implanted for months, the system decoded brain states stably, delivered stimulation reliably and caused no adverse tissue response.

Nia plans to start human studies in people with memory loss after moderate-to-severe traumatic brain injury.
