Medicare grants pass-through payment to Neuros Medical's Altius for post-amputation pain

Starting January 1, 2027, the temporary status adds separate device payment for outpatient implants of the nerve stimulation system, the company says.

Neuros Medical said on November 5 that Medicare’s 2027 outpatient payment rule grants its Altius nerve stimulation system transitional pass-through status, effective January 1, 2027, for up to three years. The status adds separate payment for the device in hospital outpatient departments and ambulatory surgery centers, on top of the standard procedure rate. Altius is approved by the FDA to help manage chronic phantom and residual limb pain in adults with lower-limb amputations. People start 30-minute treatment sessions on demand.

The change is about payment, not new clinical evidence, since the FDA approval dates from 2024. It could make hospitals and surgery centers more willing to offer the implant, because the device’s cost has been a barrier, according to the company. The release does not give a payment amount.
