Pioneers of BCIs, cochlear implants, DBS and spinal stimulation share the 2026 Queen Elizabeth Prize
Nine engineers, including BrainGate's John Donoghue and .NeuroRestore's Courtine and Bloch, were honored for neural interface technologies.
The 2026 Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering honors nine pioneers of neural interfaces. They are John Donoghue (Brown University, BrainGate brain-computer interfaces); Graeme Clark, Erwin Hochmair, Ingeborg Hochmair and Blake Wilson (cochlear implants); Alim Benabid and Pierre Pollak (deep brain stimulation); and Jocelyne Bloch and Grégoire Courtine (spinal cord stimulation to restore walking).
Grouping these technologies together recognizes neural interfaces as a mature field of engineering with decades of work behind it.
