Biocompatibility

Also known as: Foreign body response, Gliosis, Scar tissue, Longevity

How well an implanted material coexists with body tissue over time without causing harm or being walled off by scar tissue.

The brain treats an implant as a foreign object. Immune cells can form a scar (gliosis) around electrodes, weakening the signals. Softer, smaller and more flexible materials aim to reduce this, so implants can last for decades.
