Speech neuroprosthesis

Also known as: Speech BCI, Voice BCI, Brain-to-text

A BCI that decodes attempted speech from the brain and outputs text or a synthesized voice for people who can't speak.

Electrodes over or in the speech motor cortex record the signals that would normally move the lips, tongue, jaw and larynx. A decoder predicts speech sounds and a language model assembles words. Some systems drive a digital avatar or recreate the user’s original voice from old recordings.
