Endovascular BCI

Also known as: Stentrode, Stent electrode

A BCI delivered through blood vessels: a stent-like electrode is threaded up a vein and lodged next to the motor cortex, with no open brain surgery.

Synchron’s Stentrode is the leading example. It is implanted through the jugular vein in a catheter procedure, similar to how stents are placed after a stroke, and records through the vessel wall. A small transmitter in the chest sends the data out wirelessly.

The trade-off is lower resolution than electrodes in or on the brain, in exchange for a much less invasive procedure.
