Local field potential (LFP)
Also known as: LFP
The combined, slower electrical activity of many neurons near an electrode, recorded inside the brain.
Spikes come from single neurons. LFPs reflect the summed synaptic activity of thousands of them. They are more stable over time than spikes, which makes them useful for long-term implants and for sensing-enabled deep brain stimulation.
