Paradromics reports 200+ bits per second in a new BCI benchmark

The preprint introduces SONIC, a way to measure how much information a brain interface can transmit, and reports record throughput in sheep.

Researchers at Paradromics have proposed SONIC, a benchmark for comparing brain-computer interfaces by their information transfer rate. Controlled sounds are played to an animal and the implant’s ability to read them back out is measured. Using the company’s Connexus implant in sheep, they report more than 200 bits per second with about 56 milliseconds of delay, which they describe as the highest BCI throughput reported so far.

This is a preprint, not yet peer-reviewed, and the results come from animals rather than people. A standard benchmark could still make claims across the BCI industry easier to compare.
