Artifact

Also known as: Noise artifact, Eye-blink artifact

Any recorded signal that doesn't come from the brain activity of interest, such as eye blinks, jaw clenches or power-line hum.

Artifacts can be larger than the brain signals themselves, especially in EEG. Processing pipelines remove them with filters, statistical methods such as independent component analysis, or by rejecting contaminated data.
