Signal-to-noise ratio (SNR)

Also known as: SNR, Noise

How strong the useful brain signal is compared with unwanted noise. Higher SNR means more reliable decoding.

Distance, the skull, poor electrode contact, muscle activity and electrical interference all lower SNR. Much of BCI engineering is about raising it, through better sensors or placement, or through smart filtering and averaging.
