SSVEP

Also known as: Steady-state visually evoked potential

When you look at a light flickering at a fixed rate, your visual cortex echoes that rate. BCIs detect which flicker you're looking at.

Each on-screen target flickers at a different frequency, for example 10 Hz and 12 Hz. EEG over the back of the head shows a peak at the frequency of the target being watched. SSVEP BCIs are among the fastest non-invasive designs.
