Updated US tinnitus guideline adds bimodal neuromodulation, the approach behind Lenire
The AAO-HNSF's revised tinnitus guideline includes a new statement on bimodal neuromodulation, and Neuromod says its Lenire device is now listed as a treatment option. The guideline recommends against routine rTMS.
The American Academy of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery Foundation (AAO-HNSF) published an updated tinnitus guideline on October 12 in Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery. Its 16 key action statements include a new statement on bimodal neuromodulation. On October 16, Irish company Neuromod Devices said this makes its Lenire device a treatment option in the US guideline. Lenire pairs sounds played through headphones with mild electrical stimulation of the tongue, and it received FDA De Novo authorization in 2023. The update also recommends against routine use of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), medications or supplements for tinnitus.
Clinical guidelines shape what ENT doctors offer and what insurers cover. At the time of writing, the strength of the bimodal statement had not been published on the academy’s summary page.
